If you are considering bringing a loved one being treated abroad back to Türkiye by road: the process, documents and key points.

Road or air?
In international transfers the method depends on distance, the patient’s condition and journey time. Whether the patient is fit for a long road journey is decided by the treating doctor, who in some cases may recommend an air ambulance.
The process step by step
- Initial information: You send your request with the patient’s country and city, the destination and the preferred date.
- Route assessment: Transit countries, border crossings and estimated duration are assessed, and feasibility is confirmed to you.
- Receiving facility confirmation: Acceptance by the healthcare facility in Türkiye that will receive the patient is obtained in advance.
- Documents: Travel documents for the patient and companion and the necessary approvals are prepared.
- Planning: Vehicle, team, times and rest or overnight stops are finalised.
- Transfer: The transfer takes place along the planned route.
Documents to prepare
The exact list depends on the route and the countries crossed. Usually you will need:
- A valid passport or ID for the patient and companion
- Discharge and medical status documents from the current facility (to be shared with the transport team)
- The receiving facility’s acceptance confirmation
- Your travel health insurance policy, if any
Duration and price
The duration depends on distance, border crossings and the need for rest or overnight stops. Each international request is assessed individually; a final plan and price can only be given once the route and documents are confirmed.
