Air ambulance

Definition

Air ambulance: An aircraft equipped with medical equipment for transporting patients by plane or helicopter.

An air ambulance transports patients by plane or helicopter over long distances or where road transport would be difficult or take too long. The aircraft carries a stretcher, medical equipment and a medical team.

An air ambulance transfer is planned together with road ambulance transfers to and from the airports.

Whether a patient is fit to fly is decided by a doctor.
