What’s inside an ambulance? Key equipment in the patient compartment

An ambulance is more than a vehicle: it is a space equipped for the patient’s safety and monitoring throughout the journey. We explain in plain language what is in the patient compartment and what it does.

From the stretcher to the defibrillator: the key equipment in an ambulance’s patient compartment and what it is used for.

Equipment depends on the type of vehicle

In Türkiye, ambulances are classified into different types according to their purpose, and the minimum equipment for each type is set by regulation. So not every vehicle carries all of the equipment below in the same way. You can ask which vehicle and equipment are planned when you make a request.

Stretcher and securing system

The stretcher allows the patient to be loaded safely and to stay secure throughout the journey. It locks into a system on the vehicle floor, and the patient is secured with belts.

Patient monitor

A device that displays values such as heart rhythm, pulse, oxygen saturation and blood pressure, so the patient’s condition can be monitored during the journey.

Defibrillator

A device that helps restore a normal rhythm with an electric shock in certain life-threatening heart rhythm disorders. It is used by trained staff.

Oxygen unit

The vehicle’s medical oxygen cylinders and connections allow oxygen to be given to patients who need it during the journey.

Suction unit

A vacuum device used to clear secretions that could block the airway.

Bag valve mask

A device made up of a bag and a mask, used to give manual breathing support to a patient whose breathing is inadequate.

Immobilisation equipment

Items such as a cervical collar, scoop stretcher and spine board are used to protect the neck and spine, especially after trauma.

Cabinets and supplies

Dressings, IV fluids and other supplies are stored in secured cabinets so that nothing moves during the journey.
