Patient transport ambulance

Definition

Patient transport ambulance: A type of ambulance used to move patients in a stable condition from one place to another on a planned basis.

A patient transport ambulance is used for patients who do not need emergency treatment and whose general condition is stable. Typical uses include going home after discharge, return trips to tests or treatment and planned transfers between hospitals.

The vehicle has a stretcher and securing system so the patient can travel lying down safely, as well as basic medical equipment suitable for the vehicle type.

These transfers are usually planned in advance; the date, time, pick-up and destination are agreed with the transport team.
